Fed up with campus politics and the “good old boys’” club, Kerry Ann Rockquemore moved out of academia to found an organization to help women navigate the brutal “publish or perish” world of academia.
The National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity works with over 77,000 professors.
Kerry’s experience in the academic world was very difficult, “miserable” as she says. She didn’t feel that academia was very open to women and particularly women of color and moved out to build an opportunity for women to live a great life AND be successful in academia.
She doesn’t think of herself as an entrepreneur though much of what she’s working toward is identical to the motivations of the average entrepreneur. This conversation is a refreshing boost to anyone who’s struggling with the time crunch and demands of business.
She got fired from a program that she created… and that was her blessing in disguise.
Kerry Ann was a tenured professor. Her position was very secure and she loved the opportunity to teach eager new minds. Over the course of a few years she had conceived of and developed a very successful program of instruction that was working very well in her university. She was called in for a meeting to hear that the program was being promoted to a higher level within the school and would receive all kinds of funding. She was very excited, until her superiors told her that she wouldn’t be running the upgraded program. They wanted an “elder statesman” to be the figurehead and leader.
That was her decision moment and the blessing in disguise that moved her to step out of academia and create a program of her own that she was free to run in the ways she wanted. You can hear how she turned this terrible turn of events to her advantage and moved into the entrepreneurial world in this episode of New SuperWoman Entrepreneur.
You have to become comfortable with experimenting if you’re going to succeed.
The atmosphere that Dr. Kerry Ann Rockquemore was used to was one of security. The academic role she had been in brought with it a guaranteed salary, for life. When she quit her position to begin her own company the transition from hedging her bets (the academic mindset) to taking risks and experimenting with ideas and projects was a difficult one to make.
She discovered that products and programs don’t have to be perfect at the beginning. In fact, it’s better if they’re not. The feedback she receives from clients and customers is invaluable in building those things into better resources – and that is feedback she wouldn’t receive is she hadn’t put out a “less than perfect” product in the beginning. Her insights into experimenting and its advantages in this episode are worth hearing, so take some time to listen.
You’ve got to understand how you’re spending your time.
It’s quite common for entrepreneurs to work at a harried pace on a variety of projects everyday and feel like they are being productive, when the fact is that they are spending their time in ways that are truthfully unproductive. How can you get a handle on that raging beast of misconceived time management?
One of the ways recommended by today’s guest, Dr. Kerry Ann Rockquemore, is to use a time tracker. It’s a simple tool that will tell you how you’re using your time and illuminate the time wasters that you didn’t realize were there. You can hear Dr. Rockquemore’s recommendation for an effective time tracker and how she uses it in this episode of New SuperWoman Entrepreneur.
Being conscious about your choices matters more than your ability.
Every entrepreneur is talented. They wouldn’t be an entrepreneur if that weren’t true. But talent is not the main barometer of success. Choices are. You have the power to make choices, good or bad, every day. They could be choices about how you will spend your time, what you will fuel your body with, how you will invest in people (or not), and a million others. It’s those choices that you make on a daily basis that will define you even more than your ability.
Perhaps this short paragraph is your wake up call, your opportunity to become conscious of your choices, make an assessment or evaluation of the choices you’re making (or not making), and determining to make a change for the better. In this episode Kerry Ann has lots of great things to say in that regard, so be sure to listen in.
